What are those little bottles used by bartenders?
What is this magical thing closed in those little bottles? How it can be important if they use it so little? In this short article we will answer your question and tell you a story about them.
Bitters – its the name of those mysterious liquids hidden behind the bar in so many different shaped bottles. So as the name says this liquid is really bitter, they are also called “bitter drops”. How many bartenders answered this question – “Excuse me, but what is this in this little bottles”? Bitters were made by doctors or apothecarists to treat stomach diseases for example two most famous Angostura or Peychaud’s Bitters. They contain alcohol and highly concentrated bitter taste. Ingredients which are used for those are for example gentian, all spice, cinchona bark, cinnamon, caraway, coriander seeds, cardamom etc. When we want to give a special flavour for our cocktail we use just a few drops of our bitters. For example timeless cocktails like Old Fashioned, Sazerac or Manhattan they contain in their recipes Angostura or Peychaud’s Bitters. Nowadays we can buy almost every flavour of bitters, f.e. Celery, Rhubarb, Black Walnut Bitters or we can do them by ourselves as we do in OVO Bar & Restaurant. We recommend to add some new flavours to your favourite whisky.
